One Drink To Know

Perfect Summer Cocktail: The French 75

If you've never made a French 75, you're missing one of the great warm-weather cocktails. Named after a French field gun from World War I, this drink has been a staple in bars for over a century. Bright, fizzy, and dangerously easy to drink on a hot afternoon.

Here's why it works for summer. It's light without being weak. The gin gives it backbone, the lemon keeps it crisp, and the Champagne makes it feel like a celebration. It's the kind of drink that works at a backyard party, a dinner on the patio, or a Sunday when you just want something better than a beer.

The Recipe

  • 1.5 oz London dry gin

  • 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice

  • 0.5 oz simple syrup

  • 2 to 3 oz Champagne (or dry sparkling wine)

  • Lemon twist to garnish

Chill your glass in the freezer for 5 minutes. Add the gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup to a shaker with ice. Shake hard for 10 to 15 seconds. Strain into the chilled glass. Top slowly with the Champagne. Twist a lemon peel over the top to release the oils, then drop it in.

One Tip
Use a quality London dry gin rather than the cheapest bottle on the shelf. The gin is the backbone of this drink, so its flavor comes through. You don't need expensive Champagne here. A dry brut sparkling wine like Cava works beautifully and keeps it affordable. A dry Prosecco also works if that's what you have.

The Mettle Take
The best summer cocktail isn't frozen or fruity. It's crisp, bubbly, and takes two minutes to make.

Not the drink they expect. The one they remember.

The Baseball Cap Rules Every Man Should Know

A good cap is a wardrobe staple. But most guys wear the same beat-up hat into the ground and never think twice about it. Here's how to do it right.

Keep it clean.
A dirty, sweat-stained cap ruins an otherwise sharp outfit. Spot clean the sweatband with a little dish soap and warm water using an old toothbrush. For the rest, a soft brush and cold water does the job. Let it air dry over a bowl or a balled-up towel to help it keep its shape. Skip the dishwasher and washing machine. They can warp the brim and fade the fabric.

Own your team in more than one color.
If you're loyal to one team, don't stop at the standard home-color cap. Black, white, gray, and tonal versions pair with more outfits and look more intentional. A small rotation beats wearing the same hat every day.

Have one hat that isn't a team.
Every man should own a clean, logo-free cap or one with a story behind it, whether it's a favorite distillery, a race you ran, or a place you've been. It adds personality without trying too hard.

The Mettle Take
A cap should look chosen, not defaulted to. Keep it clean, build a small rotation, and always have one that goes with anything.

Discipline is the flex.

The Power Move

Be the Person Who Follows Up

Most people don't follow up. They have the good meeting, the promising conversation, the "let's stay in touch," and then nothing. That's your opening.

Send the text. Make the call or send the email. Circle back on the thing you said you'd circle back on. It sounds almost too simple, but following through consistently puts you ahead of the people who let things fade.

Follow-up signals two things: you're reliable and you actually care. In a world where most people drop the ball, being the guy who picks it up makes you unforgettable.

The opportunities don't always go to the most talented person. They often go to the one who stayed in the conversation.

The Mettle Take
Everybody starts strong. The follow-up is where you separate yourself.

Big shift, small signal.
