Truth or B.S.?

Eating Before Bed Makes You Gain Weight

Claim: Eating after 8 PM causes weight gain.
Verdict: B.S. (mostly)

Your body doesn't flip a switch at night and suddenly store everything as fat. Weight gain comes from total calories consumed versus calories burned over time. A meal at 9 PM has the same caloric value as the same meal at noon.

So where did the myth come from? Late-night eating tends to be mindless. Chips on the couch. Leftovers at the fridge. Ice cream during the fourth episode. The problem isn't the clock. It's the choices.

That said, heavy meals right before bed can disrupt sleep, increase acid reflux, and leave you feeling sluggish the next morning. Timing matters for how you feel — just not for the reason most people think.

The Mettle Take: It's not when you eat. It's what and how much. The fridge doesn't know what time it is.

The NA Beers That Actually Taste Like Beer

We've spent the past few months sampling dozens of NA beers, wines, and cocktails. You'll notice we didn't run this during Dry January. That was intentional. Choosing when and how you drink isn't a once-a-year challenge. It's a lifestyle decision. And good NA options deserve a spot in your rotation year round, not just when the calendar tells you to take a break.

Here are two brands that earned it.

Good Liar American IPA is the best NA IPA we've tasted. Full stop. It drinks like a legit IPA with real hop character and body. We blind tested our Mettle intern with Good Liar and a popular 6% IPA side by side. He couldn't tell which one was non-alcoholic. That says everything.

ENAY brings variety. We sampled Day Ripper (Pilsner), Ever Burst (Grapefruit Sour), and Sun Shifter (West Coast IPA). All three were solid and scratched that Tuesday night beer itch. Our pick: Ever Burst. Light, tart, and perfect as an anytime easy drinker.

Whatever your reason for adding NA to the rotation, whether it's fitness goals, better sleep, cutting back during the week, or just wanting a beer without the buzz, these two are bangers. More NA drink reviews coming soon.

Tested. Trusted. Mettle-approved.

The Stretch You’re Skipping That Fixes Everything

If you sit at a desk, drive a car, or spend hours on a couch, there’s a good chance your hip flexors are tight. You might not feel it there. You feel it in your lower back. The pinch in your squat. The posture that’s slowly getting worse.

When you sit for hours, your hip flexors stay in a shortened position. Over time they can pull your pelvis forward, increase stress on your lower back, and reduce glute activation.

The fix takes 90 seconds.

Half-kneeling hip flexor stretch. Drop one knee to the ground. Front foot flat, knee at 90 degrees. Tuck your hips slightly under and shift forward until you feel the stretch deep in the front of your back hip.

Hold 45 seconds each side. Do it daily. No equipment. No gym. Just a floor and the discipline to do it.

The Mettle Take: The tightest muscle you never think about might be the one causing the problem. Loosen it up

Train with focus, fuel with purpose.
