The Power Move

Compliment The Effort, Not Just the Result.

Most people praise outcomes. Smart leaders praise the work that created them.

When you only celebrate wins, you teach people that effort doesn't matter unless it succeeds. That builds teams afraid to take risks or try anything hard.

Generic praise: "Nice job on that presentation."
Effort-focused praise: "It's clear how much thought you put into this. The research behind your recommendations was solid."

The difference? One is forgettable. The other reinforces behavior you want repeated.

At work: Notice the preparation, the creative problem-solving, the willingness to tackle tough projects. Call it out specifically.

At home: When your kid studies hard but struggles with the test, praise the discipline and focus, not just the grade.

With your partner: "I know you went out of your way to make this happen" hits different than "thanks."

The truth: Results-only praise builds performers who chase easy wins. Effort praise builds grinders who show up when things get hard.

Notice the work. The results will follow.

Own the room. Set the tone.

Schedule a No Meeting, No Phone Walk…Everyday.

Your best ideas don't come from staring at screens—they come when your mind has room to breathe. Block ~20 minutes daily for a walk with zero meetings, calls, or notifications. Just you, movement, and silence.

Why it works: Your brain needs downtime to process information, make connections, and solve problems. Constant input creates mental congestion. Walking without distractions gives your subconscious space to work.

The science backs it: Studies show walking boosts creative thinking by 60% and improves decision-making. The physical movement increases blood flow to your brain while the lack of stimulation allows deeper processing.

Make it non-negotiable: Treat it like any other meeting. Put it on your calendar. Protect it fiercely.

What happens: Problems you've been grinding on suddenly have solutions. Decisions that felt murky become clear. Stress that was building quietly melts away.

Your calendar is packed with input. Schedule time for output.

Start sharp. Stay sharper.

What’s the Deal with Proof?

Question: Why do we use "proof" instead of just listing alcohol percentage?

Answer: Because history is weird and sailors needed to know if their rum was watered down.

In the 1700s: British sailors tested alcohol strength by soaking gunpowder with it. If the gunpowder still ignited, the booze was "proven" strong enough—roughly 57% alcohol. That became 100 proof.

The U.S. simplified it: proof is exactly double the alcohol percentage. An 80-proof whiskey is 40% alcohol. A 100-proof bourbon is 50% alcohol. Math you can do drunk.

Why still use it: Tradition, mostly. The liquor industry never bothered changing, and "100-proof" sounds more impressive than "50% alcohol" on a label.

The practical difference: None. Just divide proof by two to get the actual alcohol content.

Bottom line: Proof is an outdated measurement system we keep using because "80-proof bourbon" sounds better than "40% alcohol bourbon" on a bar shelf. Marketing wins again.

Because you’re not the only one who wondered.

Compound Mettle

The Rule of 72 - How Fast Money Doubles.

Want to know how long until your money doubles? Just use the Rule of 72.

How it works: Divide 72 by your expected annual return. The result = years to double your investment.

Examples:

  • At 6% return: 72 ÷ 6 = 12 years to double

  • At 8% return: 72 ÷ 8 = 9 years to double

  • At 12% return: 72 ÷ 12 = 6 years to double

The Reality Check:

  • Money earning 1% in a savings account? 72 years to double.

  • Money in the S&P 500 averaging 10%? Doubles every 7.2 years.

That's the difference between letting your money collect dust and putting it to work.

The Rule of 72 forces better questions: Am I parking cash somewhere barely beating inflation, or am I giving it a real chance to compound?

Bottom line: Time and rate of return are your only levers for building wealth. The Rule of 72 shows you exactly what they're worth.

Wealth is built, not rushed.
