One Bottle To Know

Dented Brick Port Barrel Finished Straight Rye Whiskey

The Story
Dented Brick distills everything grain-to-glass out of Salt Lake City using 100% rye and Rocky Mountain snowmelt water. This expression starts in new American oak for at least two years, then finishes in port wine barrels. That secondary aging adds a layer of dark fruit and sweetness you don't expect from a rye. They've racked up hundreds of 90+ point ratings and medals across their portfolio, including honors from the Bartender Spirits Awards and the John Barleycorn Awards. Whatever they're doing in Utah, whiskey lovers need to pay attention.

The Pour
Leather and toasted oak on the nose with apple pie and brown sugar underneath. Cinnamon, clove, and vanilla on the palate. The finish is long with lingering rye spice and a touch of smoke. The port influence is subtle but present.

The Move
Neat. Or stir it into a Manhattan where the port finish does something special.

The Mettle Take
Around $60. A Utah rye with wine-barrel depth that punches well above its weight.

Not the bottle they expect. The one they remember.

The Ultimate Summer Steak Salad

This isn't a sad desk salad. This is a meal that earns its place at dinner.

The steak
Flank or skirt steak. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Grill over high heat, about 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 130–135°F for medium-rare. Rest 5 minutes. Slice thin against the grain.

The base
Mixed greens or arugula. Arugula adds a peppery bite that pairs better with steak than romaine ever will.

The toppings
Cherry tomatoes, sliced avocado, shaved parmesan, thinly sliced red onion, and toasted pine nuts or slivered almonds for crunch.

The dressing
Keep it simple. Olive oil, fresh lemon juice, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper. Whisk it together. Don't drown the salad. Drizzle and toss.

The Mettle Take
A steak salad isn't a compromise. It's a power move disguised as a lighter meal.

Because eating well is never just about the food.

5 Things That Make You Look Older

None of these are about age. They're about neglect. Fix them and you look sharper, younger, and more put together without spending a dime on skincare serums.

1. Clothes that don't fit. Baggy shirts and loose jeans don't hide anything. They add visual weight and make you look like you stopped paying attention. Fit is the single fastest way to take five years off your appearance.

2. Neglecting your skin. You don't need a 10-step routine. Moisturizer with SPF in the morning. That's the minimum. Sun damage is the number one thing that ages a man's face and most guys do nothing about it until it's too late.

3. A haircut that hasn't evolved. The same cut you had in 2010 is aging you. Find a good barber, tell them you're open to something updated, and trust their judgment. A modern cut frames your face differently.

4. Bad posture. Rounded shoulders and a forward head make you look tired and ten years older instantly. Stand tall, pull your shoulders back, and keep your chin level. It costs nothing and changes how people perceive you immediately.

5. Ignoring your teeth. Yellow, stained teeth age you faster than wrinkles. Whitening strips cost $30 and take less than two weeks. An electric toothbrush is another easy upgrade most guys skip. Your smile is one of the first things people notice.

The Mettle Take: Looking younger isn't about fighting age. It's about not giving it a head start.

Discipline is the flex.
