Beer Brats, the Right Way

Most guys throw brats straight over high heat, scorch the outside, and hope the middle catches up. There's a better way: beer first, grill second.
Step 1: The beer bath. In a foil pan or pot, combine two bottles of lager, one sliced onion, and a couple pats of butter. Add the brats and bring everything to a gentle simmer, not a rolling boil. Cook for about 15–20 minutes, until the brats are nearly cooked through.
Step 2: The char. Move the brats to a hot grill and sear for a few minutes, turning until the casing is browned and crisp. Cook to 160°F internal temperature for pork or beef brats.
Step 3: The finish. Keep those beer-soaked onions warm while the brats hit the grill. Then pile them onto toasted buns with the onions and a good mustard.
The Mettle Take
Beer first. Fire second. You get juicy brats, browned casings, and no guessing whether the middle is done.
Because eating well is never just about the food

One Cocktail To Know

The Black Manhattan
The Manhattan is a classic. The Black Manhattan is its darker, moodier cousin. The swap is simple: replace the sweet vermouth with Averna, an Italian amaro that brings bitter, herbal, and slightly cola-like depth.
The Recipe
2 oz rye whiskey
1 oz Averna amaro
2 dashes Angostura bitters
2 dashes orange bitters
Stir with ice until cold. Strain into a chilled coupe and garnish with a brandied cherry.
Rich, complex, and spirit-forward. It drinks like a Manhattan that spent the night somewhere darker.
The Mettle Take
Same bones, deeper soul. A classic Manhattan with the lights turned down.
Not the drink they expect. The one they remember.

5 AI Moves That Can Save You an Hour a Day
AI isn't useful because it can write a poem or make a weird picture of you as an action figure. It's useful because it can eliminate the little tasks that quietly eat up your day.
Here are five ways to put it to work right now.
1. Turn a Messy Email Into a 30-Second Job
Don't spend 10 minutes rewriting an email until it sounds right. Write the ugly version first, then let AI clean it up.
Copy this prompt:
Rewrite this email to be concise, confident, and conversational. Keep it under 100 words. Don't make it sound corporate.
Paste your draft underneath and send.
Pro move: If the first version doesn't sound like you, tell it what's wrong: less formal, more direct, warmer, shorter. Two or three words can completely change the result.
2. Stop Taking Meeting Notes
Use an AI meeting assistant like Otter.ai to capture the conversation, generate a summary, and pull out action items. It works with Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams and can pull out next steps after the call.
Then use this prompt on the transcript:
Give me the key decisions, action items, who owns each one, and any deadlines mentioned. Skip everything else.
Instead of leaving a 45-minute meeting with three pages of notes, you leave with the five things that actually matter.
3. Turn 20 Minutes of Reading Into Two
Long report? Research paper? 2,000-word article someone insists you need to read?
Let AI make the first pass.
Copy this prompt:
Summarize this in 5 bullets. Tell me what's most important and anything I need to act on.
Then decide whether the original is worth reading in full.
Pro move: For something important, follow with:What important nuance might I miss if I only read this summary?
4. Never Brainstorm From Zero
Starting from a blank page wastes time. Make AI give you something to react to.
Instead of asking, "Give me date-night ideas," add constraints: Give me 10 creative date-night ideas under $100. No dinner and a movie. Keep them within a 30-minute drive and give me at least three ideas we probably haven't tried.
Same thing works for gifts, vacations, workouts, meals, presentations, business ideas, or weekend plans.
The rule: Better input gets better output. Give AI a budget, deadline, audience, goal, and constraints whenever you can.
5. Write the Message You've Been Putting Off
Thank-you note. Follow-up email. Introduction. Condolence message. Awkward work conversation.
Don't ask AI to pretend to be you. Give it the raw material and use it to get started.
Copy this prompt:
I need to write a message about [situation]. Give me three versions: warm, direct, and casual. Keep each under 75 words and avoid clichés.
Pick the closest one, rewrite a few lines in your own voice, and send it.
The Mettle Take
The smartest way to use AI isn't asking it to do your job. It's handing over the small stuff that keeps you from doing your job.
