5 Exercises that Burn Serious Calories (No Equipment Needed)
You don't need a gym or fancy gear to torch calories. These five moves can deliver a serious burn anywhere. Estimates below are for a 185-pound person and will vary based on intensity, fitness level, and pace.
1. Running
~600–1,000+ calories/hour
At a moderate pace, running burns serious calories. Push the pace toward 7–8 mph and the number climbs quickly. Mix in short sprint intervals and you can crank up the intensity without grinding through a long run.
2. Burpees
~500–750 calories/hour
There's a reason everyone hates them. Squat, plank, push, jump, repeat. Burpees recruit nearly your entire body while driving your heart rate up fast.
3. High Knees
~450–650 calories/hour
Think running in place with the dial turned up. Drive your knees high, pump your arms, and attack them in short bursts.
4. Jump Squats
~400–650 calories/hour
Adding an explosive jump to a squat turns a strength move into serious cardio. Your legs do the work while your heart tries to keep up.
5. Mountain Climbers
~400–600 calories/hour
Part plank, part sprint. Mountain climbers hit your shoulders, core, and legs while quickly sending your heart rate north.
The Catch
These are estimates, not guarantees, and nobody needs to do burpees for an hour. Use the hourly numbers to compare intensity, then build a 20–30 minute circuit around the movements.
The Mettle Take
Calorie burn isn't just about how long you work. It's about how hard you make those minutes count.
Train with focus, fuel with purpose.

Beer Can Chicken
There are more sophisticated ways to cook a chicken. None of them involve drinking half a beer before you start.
Beer can chicken is backyard grilling at its best: simple, slightly ridiculous, and surprisingly good. The bird cooks upright over indirect heat, giving you crispy skin and moist meat. There, we said it. Moist.
The Setup
Start with a 4–5 lb whole chicken and a 12 oz can of lager. Drink half the beer, then season the bird inside and out with a generous mix of kosher salt, brown sugar, paprika, onion powder, black pepper, and garlic powder.
Slide the chicken over the half-full can so it stands upright.
The Grill
Heat the grill to 350–375°F and cook the chicken over indirect heat with the lid closed. Figure roughly 60–90 minutes, but don't cook by the clock. Use a meat thermometer and pull it when the thickest part of the thigh reaches 165°F. Let it rest for 10 minutes before carving.
The Beer
Don't waste the good stuff. A basic lager works perfectly.
The Mettle Take
Drink half the beer. Put the chicken on the other half. Fire up the grill. Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. There, we said it twice.

Mindset
The Power Move
Admit When You’re Wrong
Nobody likes being wrong. Pride kicks in, and the instinct is to defend your position, even when the facts aren't on your side.
But saying “I was wrong” isn't weakness. It's confidence.
Owning a mistake shows you're not afraid of accountability and you're secure enough to change course when you're wrong. The guy who keeps arguing long after he knows he's lost the argument doesn't look strong. He looks stubborn.
The better move is simple: own it, fix it, and move on.
No excuses. No five-minute explanation of why you were technically almost right. Just: “I was wrong.” Then get back to business.
The Mettle Take: Being right feels good. Knowing when you're wrong is more valuable.
Big shift, small signal.
